A bullbar is usually the first thing people put on a 4WD, and it's the one that changes the car the most. Not just how it looks, but how it sits, how it steers, how it stops, and what your front springs have to deal with every day from then on.

What a bullbar actually does to your 4WD

The short version

Protection out front, mounting points for a winch, lights, aerials and a recovery setup. And a chunk of weight hanging off the very front of the car, which is the part nobody tells you about.

The reasons people buy one are usually obvious enough.

Animal strikes

The big one, and the reason most people out of town won't drive without a bar. A roo at speed will write off the front of an unprotected 4WD and quite possibly leave you stranded a long way from help. A bar takes that hit into the chassis rails instead of your radiator, and gets you home.

Somewhere to mount everything

A winch, driving lights or a light bar, UHF aerials, a sand flag. Once you've got a bar, all of that has a proper home instead of being cable-tied to the grille.

Better approach angle

Most factory front bars hang low and get destroyed on the first decent rut. A properly designed bar tucks up higher and gives you more room before you're pushing plastic into the dirt.

Recovery points that are actually rated

Covered properly further down, but a good bar usually brings rated points with it, which is a genuine safety upgrade over what the factory gives you.

Here's the part most sellers won't raise. A steel bullbar with a winch puts a serious amount of weight on the very front of your vehicle, out in front of the axle where it has the most leverage. Your front springs were rated for the car as it left the factory, and they weren't asked about this.

So the front drops. How much depends on the bar and the car, but it's enough to notice, and once it drops a few things follow.

Your headlights point lower. Your approach angle gives back some of what the bar just gained you. The front shocks sit further into their travel, so there's less left before they bottom out. And your caster and camber shift, which shows up eventually as uneven tyre wear on the front.

None of that means don't fit a bullbar. It means fit the right front springs at the same time, or know that you're going to want to shortly.

That's the bit we're actually good at, and it's why we'd rather you bought the bar from a suspension shop than an accessory shop.

What does a bullbar cost?

The short version

Roughly $1,700 to $2,500 for a value looped steel bar, $2,500 to $3,300 mid range, and $3,100 upwards at the premium end. Fitting on top. It moves with the vehicle.

Most sites won't answer this without a form. These are the supply ranges across what we carry, taken from our own stock rather than plucked out of the air.

MCC 4x4 Phoenix and Rocker. Heavier build, more presence, still a fair way under the premium end. Alloy versions available on some vehicles.

$3,100 – $5,200Premium

Offroad Animal Predator and Toro, and PSR Ambush. American trucks like the Silverado, F150 and Ram sit at the top of that range.

Chassis mounted and built to take the weight of the car on a rock, rather than just to step on.

Rear protection, and getting the spare off the underside of the car. More weight again, this time behind the rear axle.

Supply only. Fitting is on top and depends on the vehicle, what has to be relocated and whether a winch is going in. Prices move with promotions and the spec, so ring us for a number on your exact car.

What else to budget for

  • A winch, if you're having one. It changes which bars are on the table and adds real weight at the front.
  • A wheel alignment shortly after the bar goes on. Cheap, and it's the sensible way to settle any change at the front rather than jumping straight to new coils.
  • Sensor and camera relocation on newer vehicles, plus looms and adapters where the bar needs them.
  • Rated recovery points, if the bar you choose doesn't come with them.

What you're actually paying for

In our experience a cheaper bar is built cheaper, and it shows up in places you don't see in a photo.

  • Packaging and protection in transit. Cheaper bars arrive with less of it, and a bar that turns up damaged is a delay before it's a discount.
  • Customer service. When there's a problem, there's often nobody at the other end. That falls back on whoever fitted it.
  • Instructions and cutting templates. Limited or vague, which turns a straightforward fit into a guess with an angle grinder.
  • Powdercoat. This is the one people notice a year in. Cheap coating can be brittle and start rusting after a short period of ownership.
  • ADR compliance and Australian airbag testing. Not optional and not something to take on trust. It's a big part of why a bar costs what it costs.

Every brand on this page has been hand selected. We've deliberately shortened our list to brands that offer real support, a solid product, and that lead their price category. There's cheaper gear out there than the MCC Falcon. We don't sell it.

The honest differences between them

The short version

MCC is the value pick and does the job, but recovery points and fog lights are separate and it's bulkier. Offroad Animal and PSR are slimmer, lighter for what they are, and come with more included.

Both are good bars. They're built to different price points and they behave differently on the car, so here's what we'd actually tell you across the counter.

MCC 4x4

A genuinely good option at the cheaper end, and the Falcon especially. Widest vehicle coverage of anything we carry, and it gets you into a properly compliant looped bar for a lot less money.

Three things to know before you buy one.

  • Recovery points aren't standard. They're a separate purchase and you want them fitted at the same time as the bar. Recovery points can't easily be added later, so this is the one to get right up front.
  • Fog lights are sold separately too. Easier, because you can just pick the bar package that includes them when we install, or add them down the track.
  • It usually sits in front of the bumper, which means a bumper cut. Not always, but usually. Two things follow from that: if your front bumper is already damaged, an MCC bar may not cover the damage, and the bar tends to be bulkier than an Offroad Animal or PSR, which matters if your garage is tight.

Offroad Animal

Australian designed and engineered, and it shows in the detail. Slimline for the protection you get, and noticeably lighter than a lot of mass-produced bars of the same size, which matters given everything else on this page about weight.

  • Designed around modern vehicles. Built to work with parking sensors, cameras, radar cruise and autonomous braking rather than fight them.
  • Zinc plated then powdercoated as standard, which is the answer to the rust problem further up this page.
  • Rated recovery points included on the Toro, along with high-lift jacking points, so there's less to buy separately.
  • Winch fitment is properly thought through, with a built-in cradle rather than an afterthought.
  • Predator or Toro. Predator for the customisable stealth hoop or hoopless look, Toro for the cleaner no-loop front. Both take a winch.

PSR

Built for people who genuinely use the vehicle off road. The Ambush comes in single hoop and low single hoop, and it's another slim option if garage clearance or approach angle matters to you.

So which one?

If budget is the deciding factor, the MCC Falcon with recovery points added at the same time is a solid buy and we'll happily fit it. If you want the lighter, slimmer bar with more included and a better finish long term, that's Offroad Animal. If you're hard off road, look at PSR.

Do I need a full bullbar, or something smaller?

The short version

If you're doing highway kilometres at dawn and dusk, or running a winch, get a full looped steel bar. If you're mostly on sealed roads and want protection without the weight on the nose, a no-loop or alloy bar gets you most of the way there.

We'd rather sell you the right one than the big one, so here's the honest breakdown.

A full bullbar makes sense if

  • You do country or outback kilometres, especially early morning or around dusk
  • You want a winch. A winch needs a bar built to carry it, and there's no shortcut around that
  • You're touring or towing and want the front of the car protected when you're a long way from a repairer
  • You want rated recovery points as part of the package

A no-loop or alloy bar is probably enough if

  • You're mostly on sealed roads around town
  • You want protection and somewhere to put driving lights or an aerial, without the loops standing up in front of the bonnet
  • You don't want the extra weight, and you'd rather not touch your front springs
  • You like the look but not the commitment

The weight difference is the real story. An alloy bar sits well under the weight of the steel equivalent, and dropping the loops takes more off again, so there's less change at the front and less chance you need new coils to hold the nose up. That's why plenty of people who only ever see bitumen are better off with one.

And the other bits

Side steps and rock sliders are two different things wearing similar shapes. Steps are for getting in and out. Sliders are structural and are there to take the vehicle's weight on a rock. If you're going off road properly, you want sliders, not steps.

Rear bars and wheel carriers get overlooked until someone reverses into a stump. A wheel carrier also gets the spare off the underside of the car, which frees up room and means you're not lying in the mud to get at it. Fair warning though, that's more weight again, this time behind the rear axle, and it will affect how the back sits.

Looped or no loop?

The short version

Loops give you more protection against an animal strike and something to mount to. No loop looks cleaner, weighs less and gives a better approach angle. Neither is wrong, it depends what you're doing.

No loop bullbars

No-loop bars are popular for good reason. They look sharper, they're lighter, and without the loops sitting up in front of the bonnet you get a better approach angle and a clearer view over the front of the car.

They still take a winch and still give you mounting points for lights, so you're not giving up the practical side of it.

What you are giving up is coverage. There's less structure standing between an animal and your bonnet, headlights and windscreen. For town driving and lighter off road work that's a reasonable trade. For dawn runs on a country highway, less so.

Looped bullbars

The loops are there to catch what a lower bar would let through, and to keep it out of the windscreen. If you're regularly on roads with animals on them, that's what you're buying.

You pay for it in weight, in a bit of visibility, and in looks if that matters to you.

No-loop bars aren't pointless. They're a genuine choice with a genuine trade-off, and for a lot of vehicles that never leave the black top they're the better buy. Just go in knowing what the loops were doing.

Steel vs alloy?

The short version

Steel is stronger and cheaper and heavier. Alloy saves you a serious amount of weight, costs more, and is harder to repair. Weight is the deciding factor for most people, whether they realise it or not.

Steel

Steel is what most bars are made of, and for most people it's the right answer. It takes a hit and deforms rather than shattering, it's straightforward to repair, and it's the cheaper option.

The cost is weight, and that weight is the thing that lands on your front springs.

Alloy

Alloy bars are noticeably lighter, which means less effect on your ride height, less strain on the front end, and a bit less fuel used over the life of the car.

They cost more up front. They're harder to repair properly if you do connect with something, because welding alloy well is a specialist job.

Steel vs alloy, our viewOur opinion

If you're already close to your front axle limit, or you've got a heap of other gear on the car, the weight saving on an alloy bar is worth paying for. If the car is otherwise fairly standard and budget matters, steel and a set of front springs to suit will usually get you a better outcome for the money.

Recovery points, and why the factory tie-downs aren't one

The short version

Factory tie-down points are for strapping the car to a truck, not for snatching it out of a bog. Get rated recovery points, or a bar that comes with them.

This one matters more than any styling decision on this page, because it's the one that can hurt somebody.

The hooks and loops your vehicle came with are transport tie-downs. They're designed to hold a stationary car down onto a trailer or a ship. They are not designed for the shock loads that come with a recovery, and they can fail under one.

When a tie-down lets go mid-recovery, it doesn't just drop. It comes back down the strap at whoever is standing near it. That's how people get badly hurt on what looked like a routine bog.

Rated recovery points are engineered and tested for exactly that load, and they're designed to feed it into the chassis rather than into a bracket that was only ever holding the car still.

Factory tie-down points are not safe for recoveries. If you're going anywhere you might get stuck, fit rated recovery points, or buy a bar that comes with them already built in.

Why weight is the number that matters most

Every kilo on a bullbar sits in front of the front axle, which is the worst place on the car to add weight. It's the same reason a long lever moves a heavy thing: the further forward it is, the more effect it has.

That's why the same weight on the front bumper does far more to your ride height than it would sitting in the back of the tub.

So when you're comparing two bars, the weight difference isn't a trivia point. It's the difference between needing new front springs and not.

What "winch compatible" actually means

A winch pulls with several tonnes of force, and all of that has to go somewhere. In a winch-compatible bar it goes into a cradle built into the bar and then into the chassis mounts.

A bar that isn't built for a winch has nowhere to put that load. Fitting one anyway isn't a shortcut, it's a failure waiting for the worst possible moment.

Most of the bars we sell are winch capable, but not all of them, and it can vary between models within the same range. Don't assume. Tell us you want a winch and we'll confirm it for your exact vehicle before you buy anything.

Also worth knowing: a winch is a solid chunk of weight again on top of the bar, and it sits right at the front. If you're planning on one, tell us at the start so we can factor it into the springs rather than after.

Approach angle, and why a bar can help or hurt it

Approach angle is how steep a rise you can drive at before the front of the car touches it. The factory plastic bumper on most 4WDs is terrible for this, because it hangs low and wide.

A well designed bar cuts the corners back and tucks up higher, so you get more angle to work with.

But the weight of the bar drops the front of the car, which gives some of that angle straight back. Which is another way of saying the bar and the springs are one decision, not two.

Rock sliders vs side steps

They look similar and they do completely different jobs.

A side step is for getting in and out of the car. It's rated to hold a person, not a vehicle.

A rock slider is structural. It's mounted to the chassis and it's designed to take the full weight of the car resting on a rock or a ledge and slide over it, protecting the sills.

If you're going off road properly, a step will fold. Buy the slider.

Parking sensors, cameras and radar

A modern 4WD has a lot going on in the front bumper. Parking sensors, a camera, adaptive cruise radar, sometimes washer jets.

A bar designed for your vehicle accounts for all of it, and part of a proper fit is relocating what needs relocating into the bar so it still works afterwards.

If someone's fitting a bar and hasn't mentioned any of this on a car that has those features, that's worth asking about.

Can I install a bullbar myself?

Yes, anyone can. It just depends how easy it's going to be on your vehicle.

If you're fairly handy, have an extra person to help, some decent tools and good attention to detail, you can install most bullbars in one to two days.

Gone are the days where you bolt it to the chassis and that's it. There are more and more parts to swap over, looms to extend or cater for, and clearances to check so everything still moves the way it should.

Some vehicles are a genuinely big job. A Land Rover Defender or some of the American trucks take us more than a day to do properly, and we do this every week.

Why does my bullbar need a gap behind it?

The bullbar is mounted to the chassis, so the only flex in it is through the material itself. Your body is mounted to the chassis on soft rubber body mounts, and those move.

On some vehicles, LandCruisers and some Isuzus and Mazdas among them, those mounts are quite soft. Over time the body can shift or settle slightly closer to the bar.

So we're fairly strict about it. We want 20mm of clearance, or as close to it as we can get, over any possible contact point.

That's what lets you drive anywhere without worrying about cracking a headlight, or worse.

What happens to your headlights

When the front of the car drops from the weight of a bar, your headlights drop with it. You end up lighting the road closer than you should be, which matters most on exactly the country roads you fitted the bar for.

Getting the ride height back is the proper fix. On some vehicles the headlight levelling can be adjusted as well, and on leaf sprung cars there can be levelling brackets involved.

It's a small thing that gets ignored constantly, and it's a safety item.

Do I need to upgrade my springs when I fit a bar?Our opinion

Usually not, and we're not going to pretend otherwise just because springs are what we sell.

A car will safely drive with most bullbars on the front of it. If you're concerned, book a wheel alignment shortly after the bar goes on and get it dialled in. That's the sensible first step, not new coils.

Will the front drop? Probably, slightly. You've added weight to the front, so of course it does.

But your car already changes height with load. Every time you put something in the back or take it out, the stance changes and the front height can move with it. A bar is one more thing in that equation rather than a new problem.

If you want to minimise the drop, choose the lightest bar you can. Alloy, or something like the Offroad Animal Predator which is slim for the protection it gives. You still may benefit from replacing the front coils, but it's a choice rather than a requirement.

Do we do standard height front coils? Not usually, but sometimes we can. Ask us.

Things you can check before you buy

Find the bar's weight. It should be published. If it isn't, ask. Two bars for the same vehicle can differ by a surprising amount.
Check it's made for your exact build. Not the model, the build. Year, body style and trim all matter on modern vehicles.
Decide on the winch now, not later. It changes which bars are on the table and it changes the weight sum.
Look for rated recovery points. Either built into the bar or as a separate item, but don't skip them.
Measure hub to guard at the front before fitting. Write it down. Measure it again after. Now you know exactly what the bar cost you in ride height.
Check what's in your front bumper. Sensors, camera, radar. Know what has to be relocated so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

Are no-loop bullbars pointless?

No. They're lighter, they look cleaner, and they give a better approach angle and better forward visibility, while still taking a winch and driving lights. What you give up is coverage against an animal strike, so they suit town driving and lighter off road work better than dawn runs on a country highway. It's a genuine trade-off rather than a lesser product.

Do I need rated recovery points, or are the factory tie-downs OK?

If you're going anywhere you might get stuck, you need rated recovery points. Factory tie-downs are designed to hold the car still on a truck, not to take the shock load of a recovery, and they can fail. When one lets go it comes back down the strap at whoever is standing nearby. Fit rated points, or buy a bar with them already built in.

Will a bullbar make my car sit lower at the front?

Yes, unless it's very light. A full steel bar, especially with a winch, will drop the front noticeably. That affects your headlight aim, your approach angle, how much shock travel you have left and your front alignment. It's not a reason to avoid a bar, it's a reason to sort the front springs at the same time.

Will a bullbar affect my airbags?

Not if it's engineered for your vehicle. Bars are designed and tested so the car still behaves the way the manufacturer intended in a frontal impact. What causes problems is fitting a bar that wasn't made for your exact make, model and build, or modifying one to fit. Don't do that.

Can I still use my parking sensors and front camera?

Yes. On vehicles with sensors, a camera or radar in the front bumper, a proper fit includes relocating what needs relocating into the bar so everything still works. That's a normal part of the job.

Steel vs alloy

Steel is stronger for the money and easier to repair, but heavier. Alloy saves real weight, which matters if your front end is already loaded up, but costs more and is harder to repair properly. If budget is the constraint, steel plus the right front springs usually beats alloy on its own.

What's the difference between side steps and rock sliders?

Steps are for getting in and out of the car. Sliders are chassis-mounted and built to take the weight of the vehicle resting on a rock. If you're going off road properly, buy sliders.

Do you fit bullbars, or just sell them?

Both. We fit in our workshop, and we ship Australia wide if you're not local. If you're having it fitted elsewhere, tell them to check the front ride height before and after, and to sort the headlight aim.

Can I put a winch on any bullbar?

No. A winch has to mount into a cradle built to take several tonnes of pull and feed it into the chassis. Most of the bars we sell are winch capable, but not all of them, and it can differ between models in the same range. Tell us at the start that you want a winch and we'll confirm it for your vehicle. It also adds real weight right at the front, which affects the spring decision.

Do you do suspension as well?
